BARCLAYS LAUNCHES INTERNET AND MOBILE BANKING IN TANZANIA:

Barclays launches internet banking in Tanzania
Barclays Bank in Tanzania has launched internet banking in the country to enable customers to access banking services online.

The bank has also launched an Android application that will be accessible through Android powered tablets. Known as Barclays Tabloid Banking, it will also be available on Apple’s iOS platform.

Android powered phones will have their customised applications allowing mobile banking.

Speaking at the launch Samuel Mkuyu, head of product at Barclays Bank Tanzania, said customers can now easily pay bills and check bank balances over the internet securely and conveniently at any time.

The use of mobile has seen a lot more people being banked in Sub Saharan Africa thanks to the proliferation of mobile money platforms and mobile banking products.

Internet World Stats put internet penetration in Tanzania at 12 per cent in June 2012, with more than five million people accessing the internet.

Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) put Mobile subscription at a little over 25 million in September last year.
