Tanzania had led to an increase in mobile penetration from 5 million to 28 million subscribers in less than 10 years.

Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology, John Mngodo, stated that the NBS would map out a strategic vision for broadband access in the country.

“The objectives of the NBS will include ensuring universal service and access to reliable, affordable and secure broadband services by all citizens prioritizing rural and underserviced areas,” he said.

“It has been proven that every 10% increase in broadband penetration in developing countries results in a corresponding increase of 1.3% in GDP. The broadband penetration in our country is still very low hence underscoring the need of having the NBS,” he added.

Mgodo further said that his department was expanding broadband capacity to support the economic and social goals of the country. Expounding further, he said that broadband readiness in Tanzania had led to an increase in mobile penetration from 5 million to 28 million subscribers and from several hundred thousand to 5 million internet users in less than 10 years.
