MCL , AIRTEL SIGN ‘NEWS’ DEAL FOR SMS SERVICE

Dar es Salaam. Airtel Tanzania and Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL) have entered into a ‘Breaking News’ deal that will enable their customers to receive information — local and foreign.

MCL publishes Mwananchi, The Citizen and Mwanaspoti newspapers
The pact is about a news and entertainment alert service and costs Sh120 a day.
The service is powered by Airtel for its subscribers, who wish to receive real-time alerts of the news — local and foreign — delivered through an SMS update provided by Mwananchi journalists on the field.
Speaking at the launch of the service yesterday, MCL chief operations officer Francis Nanai said the service was aimed at bridging the information gap in the community by using mobile phones.
“As we all know, with the changing times, the mobile technology has become a very critical element of our everyday life; this is why Mwananchi Communications Limited has decided to go beyond the print media,” said Mr Nanai
‘Breaking news’ is a service that was launched by Mwananchi last year, and it has attracted more than 500,000 subscribers, according to Mr Nanai. “With the partnership we are making today with Airtel Tanzania more people will have a greater chance to bridge the information gap as we all know that information is power,” he said.
Airtel Tanzania managing director Sunil Colaso said Airtel had always been committed to providing the most innovative, affordable and reliable services.
He cited Airtel Yatosha, Airtel Money, Bure Pack-Hatoki Mtu Hapa as examples.
“We are today adding yet another chapter to this commitment and bring a new and flexible way of accessing news from reliable sources of Mwananchi Communications Limited,” he added
Mr Colaso said in the new partnership customers would be charged Sh120 to receive all breaking news of the day. “Airtel believes that this service will help people of Tanzania to be more aware and informed of the happenings around, wherever they are.”
Airtel customers will now be able to subscribe and select the type of news from various categories, in languages of their choice.

They will be required to dial *149*37# and choose- breaking news, sports news, entertainment news and so on in either Swahili or English.
